Washing the streets

18 10 2009

The Chinese (or at least, Nanjingers) are all about keeping the streets clean. This is great, as you’ve seen from our pictures of our beautiful city. They’ve got individual street sweepers patrolling with a huge bin on the front of their bicycles who grab rubbish with the words longest wooden salad tongs and they’ve got the musical water trucks. That’s right, folks, the musical water trucks. Every day I hear the sweet, electric sounds of Fur Elise or the opening of the Close Encounters theme and think, “ICE CREAM TRUCK!” I am wrong. That is the warning music of the enormous truck that travels down the middle of the roads (remember that lanes are always just decoration here) and high powered water shoots from below towards the sidewalk. Beware bikes, scooters and pedestrians- you will get clean.

I like the musical warning system…much nicer than a huge continuing blast of a horn!
