Jazz standards

13 04 2010

So I’m not sure if we’ve ever really done an update on the site about this, but Missy and I have been performing at this small jazz bar-ish place in Nanjing called Nail Bar (Or Ding Zi Ba in Pinyin Chinese if you care about that). Anyway, we play a collection of some old jazz standards from the ’30s and ’40s as well as some cowboy swing, some newer soul stuff like the Shirelles and Roberta Flack, and even the odd newer song, which have been met with a little more trepidation. At any rate, it’s been fun. We’ve been performing on Fridays and Saturdays every week. Sometimes the crowd is noisy in the Chinese manner of playing games directly in front of the stage that involve shouting and pounding on the table, and sometimes they’re quiet in a “We’re just here for a drink” kind of way, but we’ve also had nice nights where people have genuinely seemed to enjoy the music.

Unfortunately, this post comes after hearing that the manager who hired us has now been fired. So we’re not entirely sure our gig will be continuing. In the Chinese way, we don’t expect an update on that without us pursuing the information, but hopefully we’ll know tonight. And when we know, so will you.

I hope the gig continues! I’m pretty sure someone requested video of a performance or two a loooonnnnggg time ago. This must be captured, shared and archived. Future generations (as well as current) will need to see this to believe it.

I believe someone else may have seconded that request!! Little Lizzie (aka your granddaughter named after her favorite pseudo-auntie) will want to see that one day!
